Flag Day Activities for Kids

Labor Day Parade
Flag Day is the United State's celebration of the red, white and blue. It originated as the idea of schoolteacher Bernard Cigrand, who arranged for his Wisconsin students to observe the birthday of the U.S. flag. The event spread among other schools, and organizations like the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution began celebrating the event in 1892. Flag Day didn't become an official national holiday until 1949, when President Truman signed an act of congress to designate June 14 as National Flag Day. As the event began with children in mind, it makes perfect sense to continue the tradition by hosting Flag Day activities for kids.

Decorate for a Flag Day Party

If you're hosting a Flag Day picnic, you'll have enough to do just cooking up your favorite recipes and getting the yard ready. Save time by hiring a lawn service company. To keep the kids out the kitchen, have them make decorations for your party. Here are some things they can do:

  • Have them make welcome signs. Guests don't always know where to go for a party, but welcome signs can point the way. Let your kids cut triangle-shaped flags to use as arrows. They can decorate the flags with stripes, stars, and, of course, red, white and blue colors. Glue the flags onto thin dowels and place them along the street to show guests where to go for the party.

  • Let kids make decorations to line walkways. Putting candles in paper-bag lanterns can help mark areas where your guests may have trouble seeing the walkway. Have your kids use flag stencils to trace shapes onto paper bags and then cut out the shapes. Put a charged solar-powered candle inside each bag to light the way.

  • Ask them to make centerpieces. Your kids can come up with ideas to match your Flag Day theme, or you can give them directions. For a patriotic flare, have them create flag centerpieces like the ones from Crayola. For a fun theme, have them design pinwheel centerpieces such as the ones from the Celebration Shoppe.

Visit the Birthplace of National Flag Day

While national holidays, such as the Fourth of July or Memorial Day, often have parades, few cities actually host a Flag Day parade. If you're looking for a fun family event to attend, consider heading to Waubeka, Wisconsin. The people of this area have celebrated the holiday since 1946, and the day's events include a patriotic parade. While you're there, check out the memorial dedicated to B.J. Cigrand.

The Flag Day activities actually take place on the second Sunday in June, and they include a patriotic program where participants recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing the National Anthem. Your kids can enjoy the flag-raising ceremony, as well as military planes flying by the celebration.

Discover History With The National Flag Day Foundation's Events

The National Flag Day Foundation often hosts events to commemorate the birthday of the American flag. For Flag Day 2011, the foundation hosted an essay contest for children in grades 4 – 12. The contest (with the topic "What Our Flag Means to Me") netted the winner a $500 savings bond, with second place winning a $250.00 savings bond. That's incentive enough to get most kids to learn about this national holiday!

National Flag Day can be the perfect time to start a family tradition. Why not take the time to honor one of the most prominent American symbols known across the globe? For more on national holidays, check out our blog.
